About XR Hackney & Tower Hamlets
XR Hackney is a mix of ordinary local people who meet up regularly together as well as in smaller working groups.
We plan and organise our own actions, actively work on growing our numbers and collaborate with other movements and community campaigners.
OuR principles and values
All of our actions are guided by our principles and values, which include non-violence, equality, care and avoidance of personal blaming and shaming.
Our Three Demands
Our demands unite us with other XR groups worldwide. They are rooted in love, care and a fundamental commitment to climate justice. This means recognising and addressing the fact that some communities are more affected than others by the climate crisis – often those who have contributed to it least.
01 Tell the truth
All institutions must communicate the danger we are in. We must be clear about the extreme cascading risks humanity now faces and the injustice this represents.
02 Act Now
Every part of society must act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025 and begin protecting and repairing nature immediately.
03 Decide together
The Government must create and be led by a Citizens’ Assembly, where the priorities of ordinary people will replace the vested interests of a powerful few.
We use non-violent direct action
To achieve our demands, we use non-violent direct action. You might have also heard this described as civil disobedience. These methods of protest are deliberately disruptive and are based on the successful track record of other historical movements such as civil rights and Indian independence.
